Safety in Action 2017: Best School

DURING week commencing 22nd May 2017, 789 children aged 10 - 11 from 27 different schools within the boundary of Lewes District Council descended on Newhaven Fort to take part in Safety in Action Week. The event organised by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service aims to give children a better understanding of safety in a variety of environments.
At each of the 10 sessions during the week, the children who were split into teams of up to 10, worked their way around activity stations covering different aspects of safety, including Road Safety, Safety on Buses, Safety on the Railway, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, Food Hygiene, Safety in the Water, the dangers of Alcohol, First Aid and Stranger Danger. At each station, they were awarded points out of 20 relating to how well they understood the safety aspects and how well they answered questions put to them.
Seaford Rotary Club’s involvement with this event is firstly to provide the prize money for the best school and for the best team, and secondly to provide assistance during the week in putting together information packs for the schools and in adding up the scores.
The winning school this year was Plumpton Primary School with a score of 191 out of 200 for their two teams.
On Wednesday 21st June President Bill Pierce went along to the school to present a cheque for £250 to Headteacher Richard Wilkins, while event organiser Sophie Hepworth of East Sussex Fire and Rescue presented the children with a framed certificate which recorded their success.
A big thank you to East Sussex Fire and Rescue for organising this event, and to the Rotarians who helped during the week.
The Safety in Action Week gives enormous value to the children who attend, helping them to understand safety in many forms. Long may it continue.
