Firle walk

ON a hot sunny Tuesday morning in August 12 members and wives together with 2 dogs (Bruno and Teddy) assembled in the car park at the rear of The Ram public house at Firle to commence our latest walk exploring the countryside around Firle.
We were unexpectedly joined by two members of a Crowborough Rambling group who had been unable to locate the rest of their group and who were unfamiliar with our area. We were pleased to include them in our number and found them to be good company.
Several wives were missing from the group as they were attending an Inner Wheel lunch. The group was also missing one Rotarian and his dog Mollie who arrived late at the car park to find that the group had left to start the walk. It took a good half an hour for the late starter to catch up the rest of the party, and then only as they stopped under the shade of some trees for a welcome rest from the hot sun and a water break.
The walk took the group along the Old Coach Road where we enjoyed some fine views and alighted upon the Beanstalk Garden Tea Rooms which sits at the foot of the South Down and is well off the beaten track and which were unfortunately closed.
The group continued eastwards and turned north to commence the return leg passing through the grounds of Charleston Farmhouse [where an important literary festival is held each May].
The route continued through harvested wheat fields and fields of corn before returning to Firle village through the grounds of Firle Place where we could enjoy the splendour of the park and mansion.
The hot weather necessitated several water breaks particularly for our three four legged friends.
The group was very pleased to see the Pub at the finish where 15 tired walkers partook of ample refreshment and shelter from the hot sun along with their four legged friends.
