Car Parking for South Coast Triathlon and Half-Marathon

THE weekend of 9th/10th July saw competitors for the South Coast Triathlon and Half-Marathon descend upon Seaford, and once again Seaford Rotary Club organised the car parking in the Martello Fields.
On the Friday before the events a group of 5 Rotarians lead by Tony Henley prepared for the events by marking out the white lines for the parking bays. It was decided to only mark the West Martello Field.
Early on the Saturday, a group of Rotarians assembled to manage the parking of competitors’ vehicles, not only collecting parking fees but also helping to guide each arrival into their allocated space.
On the Saturday, competitors took part in several triathlon events.
The first events at 09:00am were the Super Sprint (200m swim - 10km cycle - 2.5km run) and the Fun Triathlon (same distances), followed by the Olympic event (1500 metre swim - 40 km cycle - 10 km run) and Olympic Team Relay which both started at 09:30am.
Up to the start of these races, the flow of vehicles was constant but not overwhelming, and vehicles of competitors and spectators for these races filled half the Western Martello Field.
Cars and some large vans continued to be parked throughout the morning such that as the start time of the last race, the Sprint (750m swim - 20km cycle - 5km run) and Sprint Team Relay at 11:45am approached, consideration was being given to opening the overfill field for parking. This however was ultimately found not to be necessary.
On the Sunday, competitors could either take part in either the Half Marathon (21.1K), a 10K run or a 5K fun run. All races started at 09:30am.
All competitors’ cars were successfully parked by the start of the race and only the arrival of a few late spectators occupied the Rotarians on duty after the race start.
The result of the Rotarians efforts on the two days was over £1,200 raised for use in supporting local charities.
